Swirled Apple Slab Pie
Loved making this different take on classic apple pie with my friend Laura! You may think that we’d be pie-ed out after Thanksgiving, but you would be wrong.
The swirl technique was actually super easy (there’s a tutorial in the recipe with photos!) and It’s something I’d like to do again for a traditional pie top next year. You basically make a big long cinnamon bun log and slice it up. The slides come out so perfect - it’s very satisfying. We added some turbinado sugar to the top which I accurately described to Laura as “muffin sugar”
Please note: the recipe mentions putting a foil lined baking sheet under the slab pie in the oven and does not explain why. It is to catch the drippings when the apple filling starts inevitably bubbling over. If you don’t do this, the goop will burn the bottom of your oven and set off your smoke alarm while you frantically run around the house opening all the windows and directing an oscillating fan at the oven. Why do I mention this? Oh, no reason….
